Solairus Aviation Gains Large Cabin Aircraft Ops

Solairus Aviation announced today that it has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate aircraft carrying 10 or more passengers in revenue generating operations. This places the company among a select group of private aviation companies approved to operate larger, long-range business jet aircraft in air charter service.

“We are committed to expanding our services continually, and to providing our clients with more options to meet their aircraft management and charter requirements,” said Solairus CEO Dan Drohan. “This approval makes Solairus’ fleet of large cabin charter aircraft available for long range and international charters, and positions us for further growth nationwide.”

It has been a year of achievement and growth for Solairus. After assembling a highly sought-after management team comprised of aviation veterans, Solairus earned the Aviation Research Group/US coveted Platinum rating and opened an East Coast Operations office. Today Solairus manages one of the nation’s largest fleets of late-model business jet and turboprop aircraft, serving clients throughout the United States and worldwide.

“As a general rule, the larger the aircraft, the more complex the operations and maintenance standards,” said Greg Petersen, Solairus Chief Operating Officer. “The FAA’s ‘10 or more’ program requires significantly higher audit and quality assurance standards, including a Continuous Airworthiness Maintenance Program for each and every aircraft.”

This FAA approval also requires Solairus to have a Continuing Analysis and Surveillance System (CASS) in place, with a Quality Assurance Officer whose duties are to continually review the operator's maintenance programs. These requirements are virtually identical to those required of commercial airline operators, and place Solairus among the most elite business jet operators in the world. “Obtaining this approval is an excellent indication of our relentless commitment to operational safety,” added Drohan. “This approval, in conjunction with our Safety Management System (SMS), assures our clients that we operate using known best practices, designed to achieve the highest levels of safety and professionalism.”

Solairus Aviation Earns Coveted ARG/US Platinum

Solairus Aviation has achieved the highly sought-after Platinum rating by Aviation Research Group/US (ARG/US), a national leader in safety, operational, auditing, and market research with respect to the business aviation industry.  Solairus Aviation is one of just 71 of the approximately 1,000 private aircraft charter and aviation asset management companies in the United States to hold the Platinum rating, the highest level possible under the ARG/US audit program.

Solairus Aviation is a full-service private aircraft charter and aviation asset management company that provides service to airports across the U.S. and internationally as well as expertise in acquiring and operating a wide range of aircraft.  Bringing together top industry professionals under a new banner, Solairus Aviation has emerged as the new leader in the private aircraft charter and management industries.

“Our goal for Solairus Aviation is to set a new standard of excellence for private aviation services,” stated Dan Drohan, president and CEO of Solairus Aviation.  “We have assembled a stellar team, including industry icon Jake Cartwright, to provide our customers with an unmatched depth of knowledge, expertise, and commitment to the highest level of service.  We operate a diverse fleet of corporate aircraft, including heavy, mid and light cabin jets, in addition to various turbo-prop aircraft.  Approximately 20 of the aircraft are available for Part 135 charter.  The ARG/US Platinum rating is yet another jewel in the Solairus crown, and we’re very pleased to receive this prestigious award in recognition of our efforts.  More than anything, I am extremely proud of the Solairus team and their accomplishments over the last six months. ”

According to ARG/US, the Platinum rating is awarded to those operators who meet the criteria for Silver and Gold, and successfully pass an ARG/US on-site audit.  The ARG/US audit is a true process audit administered by trained and experienced aviation auditing professionals to evaluate the operator against industry best-practice standards.  A Platinum rating requires a functioning Safety Management System, a clear and workable Emergency Response Plan, and appropriate written standards, implementation, and records for all major aspects of Operations and Maintenance within a flight department or charter company.

An active Airline Transport-rated pilot with more than 6,500 flight hours, Dan Drohan has been in the aviation industry his entire career.  He founded the original company, Sunset Aviation, in 1992 with entrepreneurial drive, business acumen and an unstinting commitment to quality, quickly establishing a stellar reputation for safety and service.  As the primary architect of Sunset’s growth, Drohan oversaw the initiatives that catapulted the company to one of the premier aircraft charter and management companies in the U.S.  After the sale of the business in 2007, Drohan led the company through its eventual re-birth as an independent entity and ultimate renaming as Solairus Aviation.

Under the Direction of CEO Dan Drohan and Vice Chairman Jake Cartwright, Company Sets New Benchmark for Private Air Charter and Aircraft Management Services

Dan Drohan, founder of Sunset Aviation, LLC, has announced the renaming of Sunset Aviation to Solairus Aviation. Solairus Aviation is a full-service private aircraft charter and aviation asset management company that provides service to airports across the U.S. and internationally as well as expertise in acquiring and operating a wide range of aircraft. Bringing together top industry professionals under a new banner, Solairus Aviation has emerged as the next generation of private aviation services, fortified by invaluable guidance from industry luminary Jake Cartwright, the company's vice chairman.

"Solairus Aviation executive team represents the cornerstone of our business: providing our clients with the trusted stewardship and guidance of one of the industry's most experienced and respected management teams,"said Drohan, president and CEO of Solairus Aviation. "We are incredibly honored to have Jake on board, as he contributes a depth of experience and vision that is virtually unmatched in the aviation industry."

An active Airline Transport-rated pilot with more than 6,500 flight hours, Dan Drohan has been in the aviation industry his entire career. He founded the original company in 1992 with entrepreneurial drive, business acumen and an unstinting commitment to quality, quickly establishing a stellar reputation for safety and service. As the primary architect of Sunset's growth, Drohan oversaw the acquisitions and infrastructure initiatives that catapulted the company to one of the premier aircraft charter and management companies in the U.S. After the sale of the business in 2007, Drohan led the company through its eventual re-birth as an independent entity.

"I am inspired by Dan's dynamic sales leadership and unyielding commitment to safety and exceptional service," commented Cartwright. "With Dan's leadership and the excellent executive team we have assembled, I believe Solairus is poised for tremendous success."

Cartwright was previously at TAG Aviation USA, where he served as president and CEO. A former Marine Corps F-4 Phantom pilot who served in Vietnam, he has logged more than 10,000 hours of flight time as a commercial pilot. In 1989, Cartwright joined Aviation Methods Inc., where he oversaw flight operations, charter sales, marketing, and new business development. Cartwright became president of TAG Aviation USA in 1998 when the TAG Group acquired Aviation Methods. A graduate of Princeton University, Cartwright has served on the Associate Member Advisory Council of the National Business Aviation Association and on the board of the National Air Transportation Association.

Under the direction of Drohan and Cartwright, Solairus Aviation's executive management team includes: John King, chief financial officer; Greg Petersen, chief operating officer; Mark Spindler, senior vice president of aircraft management; Dave Weil, senior vice president; Tom Benvenuto, vice president, flight operations; Rene Cervantes, vice president, maintenance; Marla McGatlin, vice president, client flight services; and Craig Zirzow, vice president, business development. Solairus Aviation's leadership team is augmented by an experienced staff of management, crew, operations and sales personnel.

From its corporate offices in Petaluma and Burlingame, California, Solairus Aviation manages a fleet of well-appointed, late-model aircraft, including over 40 heavy, light, mid-size and turbo-prop aircraft nationwide, many available for domestic or international charter. Solairus supports flights to more than 5,000 airports throughout the United States in addition to operations across the globe.

To date, Solairus Aviation has achieved a Gold Certification from ARG/US, the national leader in safety, operational, auditing, market research and reporting to the business aviation industry, for its exemplary safety history, management structure and performance, and crew experience. The company also recently received the NBAA Commercial Business Flying Safety Award. Solairus Aviation's rigorous safety measures are also reflected in its Wyvern/CharterX Pilot & Aircraft Safety Survey (PASS) reports, as well as in its exacting crew training program. Solairus crews average nearly 10,000 hours of total flight time and advance through state-of-the-art simulator training services at sites provided by FlightSafety International and CAE Simuflite.

Flying Solairus Aviation is a time-efficient and sophisticated means of traveling for personal, business and group travelers. Passengers determine departure and arrival times that fit their schedules and sidestep airport screening lines, pre-departure waits, last-minute flight delays and cancellations, and the many other, all-too-familiar hassles of dealing with the major carriers and airports.

Solairus Aviation understands the significant responsibilities that come with aircraft ownership. The company offers a full range of support services focused on safety, service and savings. Under Solairus' management program, aircraft owners will benefit from their dedicated safety management program, a client services support staff, and the savings passed on to owners due to Solairus' leveraged buying power.

Petaluma, CA based Sunset Aviation, LLC officially announced its formation today with a marquis management team, comprised of leadership from the former Sunset Aviation, Inc. and JetDirect Aviation. Sunset Aviation, LLC will operate more than 40 aircraft from bases throughout the US, including California, Washington, Utah, Texas, Colorado, Ohio, New York, and Florida.

Dan Drohan will serve as the new company's President and CEO. Drohan's senior management team will include industry veteran Jake Cartwright, as well as John King and Greg Petersen. Also joining the management team are Mark Spindler, Dave Weil and Marla McGatlin, all former JetDirect senior executives. The company's headquarters are in Petaluma, CA with plans to open a south-San Francisco Bay "large cabin division" office within 30 days. The new company expects to receive its FAA authorization for operations under a new Part 135 certificate in the next seven days.

"We are really pleased to be moving forward with this new venture" said Dan Drohan, who also pointed out that the company is completely independent and separate from Sunset Aviation, Inc./JetDirect, which filed for Charter 7 bankruptcy protection this week. "We are very optimistic about the future for the new Sunset and we have planned for, and anticipate, strong growth in the coming months despite the challenging economic environment. Sunset Aviation, LLC has significant opportunity on the horizon and we are working hard to ensure a measured and stable approach to it."

The company intends to re-brand in the coming months, an effort being taken on in part to differentiate and distinguish itself from the former JetDirect owned Sunset Aviation, Inc. "We are going to build a great aviation company here" said partner Jake Cartwright, "and our new company needs a name and image that is in line with that".

The new company employs over 80 people, having hired most of the former Sunset Aviation, Inc. employees when they were laid off by JetDirect last week. "We have one of the most talented teams in the industry, and to say that our passion has been ignited with no former ties to either of the prior companies would be an understatement. It's been an interesting journey, to say the least, and we're all really looking forward to getting back to building and operating a good company - doing what we love with people we like. It's really that simple…" Drohan added.
